MAGDALENA PIECH
Vernissage with human sculpture @meatpuppet | 21.02.2025 @studioacephale | Berlin
Magdalena Piech (b. 1989 in Krasnik, Poland) is a multidisciplinary artist currently based in Berlin.
Piech's art explores the edges of human experience, with a particular emphasis on realistic portrayals of fetishism and obsession. Although her themes can be provocative, she utilizes subtle symbolism to illuminate the emotional and psychological fragility that accompanies these states of mind. Skilled in oil painting and diverse printmaking techniques, Piech has opted to focus on the demanding and tactile nature of graphite and charcoal drawing. This medium enables her to convey an intensity and precision that resonates with the themes she addresses in her work.
Not only does Magdalena Piech come from an artistic background—having graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and later earning a Master’s degree at BTK in Berlin—but alongside her artistic practice, she also has extensive experience working as a model.
Her work lives in this strong dualismus being both the excecuting subject as well as the depicted object at the same time. Technical mastery meets personal vulnarabilty - an ever exiting field of tension and progression.
Inspired by the spheres of BDSM and dark aesthetics she masterfully illustrates not only bare skin and different modalities of fabric, but also especially the reflective surface of latex – realised with a skillful stroke.
As starting point she is often referring to black and white photography in the realm of underground fashion and performance art, which she is then reworking into strong evocative realities.
In our exhibtion VANITAS we show the continuos exploration of the self through various self-potraits and their evolution over time. The traditional theme of vanitas, rooted in Baroque traditions is blending in with the transience of beauty.
„My work weds graphite and paper to summon the themes that drive me – the vulnerabilities of the physical form, the ideas of guilt and shame, and the erotic miseries that lie at the core of human existence.“ MP
